UG Summer Placement 2026 - University of Nottingham
TSN ROKSMicrometeorites and ‘meteor-wrongs’: the hunt for microscopic extra-terrestrial objects
Location: University of Nottingham
Supervised by: Lorelei Robertson
Duration: 6 weeks
Rate of pay: £12.72 per hour
Project Overview
Micrometeorites fall to the ground every single day, yet we never notice that they have. The placement will provide a student with hands on experience using light microscopy and Scanning Electron Microscopy (SEM) for sample characterisation and chemical analysis through the focus of a research project, as well as helping with the day-to-day management of working in a microscopy lab and its associated equipment. The research project will focus on the collection, preparation, identification and analysis of micrometeorites collected from the local area.
This placement is designed to develop the student’s technical competencies and fundamental knowledge of electron microscopy materials characterisation techniques. It will also develop their problem-solving, experimental design and analytical capabilities. It is an ideal project for a student looking towards a Research Technical Professional career pathway, particularly in the field of materials science.
