Project Overview

This project aims to design, prototype, and evaluate an innovative tool to enhance the calibration process of Digital Image Correlation (DIC) systems. DIC is a critical technology for strain measurement, widely used in materials testing and mechanical engineering. Current calibration methods often require multiple operators and lack repeatability. The proposed tool will enable single-operator calibration while improving accuracy and consistency. The successful applicant will gain hands-on experience in mechanical design, prototyping, and experimental testing, developing valuable technical and transferable skills.

The successful applicant will be supported in the project by our team and will initially conduct a literature review on DIC systems and calibration challenges. They will then design and develop a prototype calibration tool using CAD software before fabricating the tool using custom and off-the-shelf components.

They will then conduct a series of experiments to test the tool, such as performing calibration exercises and comparing outcomes with standard methods. Finally they will then use the tool they have produced to assess the mechanical behaviour of a heterogeneous material.

Learning Outcomes

Through this project the successful applicant will gain the following specific skills and knowledge:

  • Proficiency in CAD software and mechanical design principles.
  • Experience in prototyping, materials selection, and experimental methodologies.
  • Analytical skills in evaluating experimental data and improving processes.

Through working with and shadowing various members of our team the successful applicant will also gain insights into engineering research and technical roles. They will develop transferable skills such as teamwork, problem-solving, and communication. We will also provide multiple networking opportunities with various different technical professionals allowing for exposure to career pathways within research facilities. Throughout the project the successful applicant will have a mentor who can be a clear point of contact for guidance and support.
