UG Summer Placement 2025 - University of Exeter
TSN ROKSQuantitative Analysis of Marine Species Using Spectral and Imaging Flow Cytometry
Location: University of Exeter
Supervised by: Dr Attila Bebes
Duration: 6 weeks based on 36.5 hours a week
Pay: £14.12 per hour
Project Overview
Marine ecosystems rely heavily on microalgae as primary producers and main contributors to carbon capture, yet quantifying their abundance and diversity remains a challenge. Traditional methods, such as microscopy, are time-consuming and lack high-throughput capacity. The Exeter Centre for Cytomics (EXCC) is one of the University`s Research Facilities providing research infrastructure based on single cell technologies.
This project at EXCC leverages cutting-edge spectral and imaging flow cytometry to identify, measure, and classify marine species efficiently. By combining technologies like Cytek Aurora (spectral cytometry) and ImageStreamX MKII/FlowCam 8400 (imaging flow cytometry), the project enables rapid, multiparametric analysis of aquatic microorganisms.
This multidisciplinary project will introduce the student to high-performance single cell technologies, sample preparation techniques, and big data analysis—essential skills for careers in environmental sciences and bioinformatics. The project aligns with the EPSRC remit on technological advancement and environmental sustainability, offering a transformative learning experience.
Learning Objectives
The key tasks and activities that the successful applicant would be involved in are as follows:
- Learn sample preparation, instrument calibration and operation of spectral (Cytek Aurora) and imaging flow cytometers (ImageStreamX MKII, FlowCam 8400) and cell sorters (FACSAria Fusion, Bigfoot).
- Develop and apply protocols for staining marine plankton with fluorescent markers.
- Employ data analysis tools including high-end analysis software (FlowJo and FCS Express) and advanced programming tools (e.g., Python or R) for classification and interpretation.
- Document findings, workflows and protocols for dissemination.
By the end of the project the successful applicant will have knowledge and experience of:
- Development of technical skills in sample preparation, instrument quality control, and assay optimization.
- Data processing and high-dimensional analysis using commercial software and in-house developed machine learning tools.
- Enhanced problem-solving, critical thinking and teamwork skills.
- Exposure to real-world applications of quantitative technologies in environmental research.
The placement will provide foundational expertise in advanced bioanalytical techniques, supporting future careers in research, bioinformatics, and environmental sustainability.
