Technicians, stop being reactive: how a Fishbone Diagram can improve your problem solving

Apr 13, 2026

As a technician, you may find yourself facing the same problems time and time again. But what if the real issue isn’t the problem itself, but the fact you haven’t identified the cause. This blog is the first in a series exploring quality tools for technical professionals, and today we’re looking at the Fishbone Diagram. Whether you’re troubleshooting equipment or trying to get to the bottom of a recurring issue, this simple visual tool could change the way you think about problem solving.

What is a Fishbone Diagram?

Example of a fishbone diagram. The Fishbone Diagram is a visual tool used to identify the possible causes of a problem and is one of the seven tools of quality. The diagram gets its name from its distinctive shape (resembling a fish skeleton!), with its central spine and branching bones representing different categories of causes. It is also referred to as the ‘Ishikawa Diagram’, named after its originator, Japanese organisational theorist Kaoru Ishikawa. Since its popularisation in the 1960s, it has remained a widely respected tool used across many sectors.

How can I use the Fishbone Diagram to improve my problem solving as a technician?

Example of a fishbone diagram. First, write a problem statement on the right-hand side of the diagram (the effect) and then write possible causes alongside the different branches of the fishbones on the left-hand side of the diagram. This tool is perfect for reinvigorating a team’s strategic thinking when it feels like you’re hitting a wall, transforming an issue into a productive group idea session. Historically, the following generic headings (known as the 6M’s) have been used:

  • Methods
  • Machines
  • Materials
  • Measurements
  • Manpower
  • Environment

However, these categories can be adapted to suit your problem scope. If your diagram feels incomplete, you can also ask “Why did this happen?” and add further branches to unravel deeper levels of causes. You can download your free Fishbone Diagram template here.
