Applications are now open for a specialist mentoring scheme for technical professionals working in UK universities and research institutes.
The Cross Institution Mentoring Scheme for Technical Professionals (CIMS-T) is the first technician-led initiative of its kind supporting the specialist roles of technical professionals in the sector.
Technical managers or specialists from all levels and disciplines who work in higher education institutions are invited to benefit from mentoring, or register as a mentor to support others.
Three enterprising technicians from the Midlands established the UK-wide mentoring scheme after a successful pilot in 2024.
Trevor Hardy, Senior Laboratory Technician from the University of Birmingham is one of the technicians who has helped to establish the scheme.
He said: “As technical roles are often highly specialised, it can be challenging to find appropriate options to mentor and be mentored within our organisations.
“The Cross Institution Mentoring Scheme offers meaningful mentoring opportunities which are relevant for their professional development.”
“I’m excited to be working alongside Dr Thea Mangels, Technical Services Manager from the University of Warwick and Lisa Bedder from University of Leicester to develop this mentoring opportunity.”
