The King’s Centre for Electron Microscopy (KCEM) at King’s College London is a leading hub for scientific imaging, offering researchers access to one of the most comprehensive suites of electron microscopy techniques available in the UK. From visualising materials at atomic resolution to mapping the surface topology of biological samples, the centre serves a diverse community spanning medicine, biological sciences, chemistry, physics, materials science, and engineering.

The facility’s capabilities cover the full breadth of modern electron microscopy, encompassing Transmission Electron Microscopy (TEM), Scanning Electron Microscopy (SEM), Scanning Transmission Electron Microscopy (STEM), Serial Block Face SEM (SBF-SEM), Correlative Light and Electron Microscopy (CLEM), TEM Tomography, and Energy Dispersive X-ray Spectroscopy (EDS). This extensive toolkit is backed by state-of-the-art instrumentation from industry-leading partners including JEOL and Leica Microsystems.

The centre prides itself on a collaborative approach, embedding expert support into every stage of a research project — from initial experimental design and advanced imaging through to data interpretation and hands-on training.

The facility welcomes both King’s researchers and external users from academia and industry, with the team available at kcem@kcl.ac.uk to discuss project needs and identify the most appropriate technical approach.
