Below you’ll find answers to the most common questions about accessing courses, getting involved, and making the most of what the L&D academy has to offer.

How are your courses different to what my current institution or other training providers offer?

Unlike many other training and development programmes, our courses are designed specifically for technical professionals, recognising the critical role they play in teaching and research within universities and research institutes.

Our expert-led courses will give you practical skills, fresh insights, and valuable opportunities to connect with other technical professionals from across the sector. And – we’re trusted by more than 2000 technicians from 150 UK organisations.

How do I book a training course?

Our training courses can be booked and paid for online through University of Nottingham Online Store. 

You will be directed to the online stores and asked to make an account using your email address (you can use any email), you will also be asked to create a password.

Course bookings will close two working days before half day and one day courses and two weeks before cohort courses.

Your place on the course is confirmed only once full payment has been received.

What payment options are available?

The online store accepts credit, debit card or paypal.

I want to book a training course on behalf of someone else, is that possible?

Yes, you can book on behalf of someone else. Create an account for yourself and then add your colleagues’ details in the delegate details section.

What if I need to cancel a course i've paid for, can I get a refund?

In the unfortunate event that you cancel your place on the course; cancellation fees will be charged in accordance with the cancellation terms below:

Within 7 days of booking (cooling-off period) provided the course has not started Full refund
More than 28 days before course start date Full refund
22-28 days before the course start date 75%
14–21 days before course start date 50%
Fewer than 14 days before course start date No refund

Non-attendance without prior written notice will be charged at full course fee and no refund will be issued. Refunds will be processed within 30 days

Can I transfer to a different course if I am unable to attend?

A participant may transfer to an equivalent future course once, subject to availability. For instance, half day courses can only be substituted for half day courses and one day courses for one day courses.

No refund will be issued after a transfer has been made.

Email enquiries@itss.org.uk with the following details and we will process your request:

  • Name of course participant
  • Original course name and date
  • Request course name and date

I want to book a training course but it's fully booked. Can I join a waiting list?

Courses that are fully booked have a waiting list in University of Nottingham Stores. 

Are travel and expenses covered by the course fee?

No. Travel costs or expenses incurred by the delegate for in-person training sessions are not included in the course fee.

Do you offer discounts or early bird booking prices?

No. Our 2026 courses are heavily subsided, offering high-quality training at discounted rates comparable to other training courses in the sector.

We do offer a selection of courses and learning opportunities at no cost, including our WinterFest, SpringFest, and AutumnFest online learning festivals, some workshops and masterclasses.

Can I book more than one course at a time?

Yes. You can add multiple courses to your basket, check out and pay for them all at the same time.

Why is the course payment via University of Nottingham Online Store and not The UK Institute for Technical Skills & Strategy?

The UK Institute for Technical Skills and Strategy is hosted by the University of Nottingham.

To streamline the payment process, we are using University of Nottingham’s free online stores service to manage payments. It’s a secure payment method which is tried and tested. Receipts for organisations are available, please include your organisation name and VAT Reg number at the checkout.

The payment will appear as University of Nottingham on the payment card statement.

I'm looking for some specific training for my technical team, can you help?

We offer a range of courses on careers and professional development, leadership and management, project management and teaching and training, suitable for individuals.

I want to make a complaint about a training course. Who do I contact?

UK ITSS is committed to providing a high standard of service and learning experience.

If you are dissatisfied with any aspect of the course or our service, we encourage you to raise your concerns so that we can address them promptly and fairly.

If you have a complaint, please speak to the course tutor or a member of staff in the first instance. We aim to resolve most issues quickly through discussion and mutual understanding. If you are unable to resolve the issue informally, you may submit a formal complaint in writing.

Your written complaint should include: Your full name and contact details The course title and date(s) attended A clear description of the issue Any relevant supporting information. Formal complaints should be emailed to enquiries@itss.org.uk

We will acknowledge receipt of your complaint within 3 working days.
